Timothy's Ordination - Explaining 1 Timothy 4:14
1 Timothy 4:14
1 Timothy 4:14 – Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Paul is urging Timothy to actively cultivate and use the spiritual gift he received, a gift that was recognized and confirmed by the elders during a special moment of prayer and prophecy.
1 Timothy 1:18 – This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
2 Timothy 1:6 – Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands.
The specific gift Paul refers to here likely relates to Timothy's calling and empowerment for ministry. This "gift" may involve Timothy’s ability to teach, lead, and shepherd the church effectively. In the New Testament, spiritual gifts are often associated with specific roles or functions in the church, such as teaching, evangelizing, and pastoral care, all areas Timothy was actively involved in as a young leader.
Romans 12:6-8 – Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
The passage doesn’t explicitly address an unbroken line of succession from the apostles to later church leaders. Instead, it focuses more on Timothy’s personal calling and ministry.
The laying on of hands by the elders symbolized the church's recognition and affirmation of Timothy’s calling and his spiritual gift. This act was a ceremonial way of setting Timothy apart for his ministry. In the New Testament, the laying on of hands was often associated with commissioning or blessing individuals for ministry.
Acts 13:1-4 – Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.
While the Bible does not specify Timothy’s exact gift, the context of Paul's letters suggests it was a combination of teaching, preaching, and pastoral oversight. Paul encourages Timothy to use and develop this gift to build up the church, highlighting the importance of not letting it go to waste but rather relying on God's empowering presence in his ministry.
